I'm sure you've all heard about this quick way to sneak half-square triangles out of other blocks, but I finally put it to good use with the Monet quilt and it was so great.
When you're sewing Square-in-a-Square or Snowball blocks (where you're putting a smaller square in each corner of a larger square and sewing diagonally), instead of sewing just the one line across the middle and tossing the scraps, you can sew a second line 3/8" away.
Then when you cut through the "gutter," or the space between your two seams, you get an instant half-square triangle square.
It was only worth it for me because my starting squares were 5". Anything smaller always seemed like a waste of time for me personally.
It takes a bit more time, but not much, and now I have a huge pile of 100 blocks to use with another project. One of my friends also has a stack of random 2 or 3" blocks precut in a pile next to her machine, and she sews two of them together after each line of blocks for any other quilt. Then she gets a second scrappy project done at the same time.
