This book is officially on my favs list. It's about the plague in England, late 1660's, and opens instead of the beginning, with everyone alive, but at the end, when the survivers are wandering in their sorrows. Right off you know who's not going to make it. And this is a great tool.
A small village in England got the plague from a bolt of cloth, and rather than fleeing their misunderstanding of the disease into neighboring villages and cities, they all decide to stay quarantined in their village until it has passed. And the heroine, rises to the occasion, and becomes something she wouldn't have otherwise. More than what she was.
